WCoZ Chapters and Clusters

The members of the WCoZ work in diverse fields including health, legal aid, access to education, gender based violence, torture, economic empowerment, poverty reduction, research, property rights and governance issues.

Background to WCoZ Clusters

WCoZ held its Strategic Plan Review Meeting Retreat from the 16th to the 18th of June 2010 in Nyanga. The main objective of the meeting was to review the WCoZ Strategic Plan that was made in 2008 in line with the changing external environment in Zimbabwe. The other objectives were to align the strategic plan with and make it more responsive to the current transitional environment with contributions from WCoZ membership. During the strategic plan review meeting membership recommended the formation of thematic clusters to improve lobbying and advocacy, creation of strategic partnerships, networking and information sharing and coordination of membership.

The Thematic Clusters will be in;

Economic Empowerment , Health Education, Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, Gender Based Violence, Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Culture, Media and ICT, Politics and Decision Making, Environment.

What is a Cluster? A Thematic Cluster is a group of WCoZ members working in the same thematic area who undertake to work together by meeting regularly, sharing information and strategies, undertaking and supporting lobbying and advocacy activities. This is bound to strengthen responses on issues affecting women. The current members meetings usually bring all membership together and sometimes issues being discussed can be irrelevant for some organisations. However thematic clusters discuss issues that are relevant and useful for each member organisation attending and this is more a more beneficial use of time. Clusters commit to work to improve the rights of Zimbabwean women which is the vision of WCoZ.

What is a chapter?

The Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) is in the process of decentralizing to all urban and major growth points in Zimbabwe. This is a process of building its constituency so that more women can work to lobby, advocate and raise awareness of their human rights at all levels. Mobilizing more women is critical to building a critical mass and amplifying the voice of women.

What is a chapter? A group of women volunteers who undertake to work at their local level to raise awareness of women’s issues as well as lobby, advocate, raise awareness, protest on issues around women and girls rights. Chapters commit to work under the mission and vision of WCoZ but are free to identify local issues and pursue these. Lobby and advocacy can mean accessing and taking issues with policy makers representing the region, the police, government departments, traditional leaders and civil leaders.

Awareness raising can take the form of but is not limited to marches, picketing, sit ins, use of all media, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials. The Chapter becomes the face of WCoZ wherever they are stationed.

How a Chapter is formed. WCoZ identifies a women’s rights activist or an organization that has been working with women’s issues. That becomes WCoZ’s contact for that area and the contact mobilizes other women that are keen on women’s rights issues and can carry on with such work. Depending on the needs realized, these women will undergo a capacity building process that will lead to them becoming pioneers of a WCoZ Chapter in that area.
